I am very excited to be a part of Team Bird Brain and work with INBRE students this summer. I moved to Pocatello last August from Southern Illinois and my research involves identifying the specific mechanisms that allow bioelectric rhythms for breathing to persist and adapt to altered sensory experience in the context of prenatal and perinatal development. Specifically, I am interested in describing how CO2 and pH affect rhythmogenesis in the altricial zebra finch brainstem in vitro and how exposure to CO2 during incubation affects the development of neural circuits that control respiration. This research will contribute to the understanding of the mechanisms underlying homeostatic plasticity and provide novel insights into the development of central chemosensitivity in the zebra finch.

My research involves examining various action and reflexive patterns and how sensorimotor experience, neurotransmitters systems, and neural systems influence development of motor coordination and CNS plasticity by using a multilevel approach, including both human and non-human animal models. I am interested in how these early experiences, such as altered sensory feedback, can influence developmental trajectories. This research contributes to our understanding of the mechanisms underlying the development of motor behavior and coordination during early ontogeny.
