I cannot believe we are already over half way through with this summer! It has all clipped by, and I am not ready for it all to end. Since my last post, I have continued collecting data for my project within the Idaho Mom Study, and have also been coding like a crazy woman! I am currently the only one within our lab who is able to code our behavioral observations of mothers and their children, so my behavior analyzing abilities are at an all-time high. Along with coding, I have been doing my separate project that I will presenting on at the INBRE Conference. My project will be looking at mothers within the Idaho Mom Study who have diagnosed hypothyroidism versus mothers that don’t, and seeing if this condition had any effects on their babies that continued on through to the 6 month postnatal session. To measure whether or not hypothyroidism during pregnancy had an effect on the baby, I am looking at baby’s overall health at 6 months, and also baby’s total sleep habits.
I am super excited to be able to see whether or not there is significance within our sample due to the effects of hypothyroidism. I am very interested in women’s health, and adding to our understanding of a mother’s health during pregnancy. Through the process of analyzing data within the study, I have had the opportunity to work closely with other research assistants within the lab. I have gained new knowledge in using different statistical tests, and systems. These wonderful people have already helped me learn so much more than I could’ve hoped for, and we are only half way through the summer!
Most of my summer has flown by without too many headaches within the lab, but there are always going to be a few moments that call for a few deep breaths and a brief walk. Whenever these moments come along, I end up being grateful for them after the headache has passed. These headaches remind me of how amazing it is to have this opportunity to perform research within a lab that has already helped me for the future.
